Modesto Nuts News Release

San Jose, CA. - Pat Valaika's home run and Kyle Von Tunglen's defense backed Ryan Carpenter's gem in the Nuts 2-0 shutout of the Giants on Monday night at Municipal Stadium.

Pat Valaika clubbed a solo home run in the second inning, his fourth of the year, to help the Nuts (2-3; 25-50) snap a three-game losing streak.

That solo blast was plenty for Ryan Carpenter (W, 2-3) who tossed seven shutout innings allowing only one hit in the first six frames. In the seventh, after Kyle Von Tunglen had given the Nuts a two-run cushion with a RBI ground out, Carpenter found himself in trouble. After a one-out walk and Ben Turner ripped a two-out double, the Giants (1-4; 35-39) had the tying runs in scoring position with two outs. Ydwin Villegas smashed a fly ball to center that Von Tungeln ran down with an over-the-shoulder catch on the warning track to end the inning and keep the Nuts on top.

Giants' starter Joe Kurrasch (L, 5-2) worked a career-high eight innings, and struck out a season-high six batters, but it was not enough.

Lefty John Keck struck out the 3-4-and-5 hitters with the tying runs on-board in the eighth. Keck worked around a two-out, ninth-inning walk to polish off two scoreless innings and a three-game series-opening victory.

The middle affair against the Giants on Tuesday afternoon puts righty Devin burke on the mound for the Nuts and lefty Matt Lujan on the bump for the Giants. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 1:30 p.m.
