San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE - The San Jose Giants erupted for a season-high 15 runs in a 15-3 blowout victory over the Modesto Nuts on Tuesday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. San Jose scored in six out of their eight innings and also matched a season-high with 16 hits. The win snapped the Giants' four-game losing streak.

Brian Ragira (3-for-4, 2B, RBI) and Elliott Blair (3-for-5, 2 RBI, SB) had three hits apiece to lead the balanced offensive attack. Blake Miller (2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI), Mitch Delfino (2-for-5, 2B, RBI) and Ben Turner (2-for-5, RBI) added two hits each while Chuckie Jones (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) hit his sixth home run of the season.

San Jose starter Matt Lujan (1-0) picked-up the win in his California League debut after tossing five innings with three runs (all earned) and six hits allowed. Lujan, who was added to the Giants roster from Augusta (A) earlier Tuesday, walked four and struck out four.

The Giants jumped out early scoring in each of the first four innings. In the bottom of the first, Jesus Galindo singled to leadoff, advanced to second on a balk and scored on Miller's two-out single. The rally continued when Ragira followed with a single before Blair delivered an RBI single up the middle to make it 2-0.

San Jose added two more runs in the bottom of the second when Jones belted a two-out, two-run home run to left for a 4-0 advantage.

Lujan began his start with two hitless innings before running into trouble in the top of the third. With one out, Alex San Juan doubled before scoring two batters later on Rosell Herrera's sacrifice fly. Consecutive walks to Trevor Story and Will Swanner followed to load the bases and bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate, but Lujan settled down to strikeout Pat Valaika on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning.

The Giants then took advantage of three Modesto errors - all on one play - in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead. Ragira's one-out walk started the rally before Blair singled to put runners on the corners. Turner followed with a slow grounder in front of the mound that was mishandled by Nuts pitcher Devin Burke for an error. Burke then threw wildly to third in an attempt to retire Ragira, who had ventured off the base. With the ball rolling down the left field line, Ragira easily scored and as Blair raced home, Nuts left fielder Matt Wessinger uncorked a wild throw to the plate for a third error on the play advancing Turner into third. A batter later, Trevor Brown produced a sacrifice fly to right plating Turner to make it 7-1.

San Jose kept the pressure on with two more runs against Burke in the bottom of the fourth. Delfino led off with a single and eventually scored on Ragira's one-out double down the left field line. Then with two down, Turner came through with an RBI single for a 9-1 cushion.

Modesto got two runs back in the top of the fifth when Valaika belted a two-out, two-run homer to left cutting the lead to 9-3. Lujan though would finish the inning and the Nuts wouldn't score again in the contest.

After a scoreless bottom of the fifth, the Giants came back with three more runs in the sixth inning. A double from Miller began the frame before Ragira singled to put runners on the corners. Blair then lined a single into right plating Miller with the 10th San Jose run of the afternoon. Then after Turner struck out, Brown smacked a fly ball over the fence in left center for an apparent three-run home run. Brown, however, was ruled to the have passed Blair on the bases as he rounded first and was called out on the play. Ragira and Blair were awarded home as Brown collected two RBI's to make the score 12-3.

The Giants then capped the scoring for the day with a three-run bottom of the seventh. After consecutive walks to Galindo and Jones, Delfino ripped an RBI double down the left field line. Miller followed with an RBI groundout before a wild pitch scored Delfino to make it 15-3.

Tyler Rogers (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 SO) and Bryce Bandilla (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) combined for eight strikeouts over three scoreless innings of relief from the sixth through the eighth. Tyler Mizenko (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) then needed only six pitches to work through the ninth to finish the game.

Burke (5-4) was saddled with the loss after yielding nine runs (six earned) on 10 hits over four innings. He walked two and struck out one.
