San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - The San Jose Giants were held to three hits in a 2-0 series-opening loss to the Modesto Nuts on Monday evening at Municipal Stadium. San Jose was shutout for the fifth time this season while dropping their fourth straight game overall.
Joe Kurrasch (5-2) pitched a career-high eight innings for the Giants, but suffered the loss on Monday. The left-hander surrendered two runs (both earned) on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts during his 99-pitch performance.
The Nuts took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Pat Valaika connected for a solo home run to left center. Modesto's second run came in the fifth inning as Dean Espy led off with a double, advanced to third on Matt Wessinger's sacrifice bunt and scored when Kyle Von Tungeln grounded out to first.
Nuts starter Ryan Carpenter (2-3) earned the win after tossing seven scoreless innings with just three hits allowed. The Modesto left-hander walked two and struck out one.
Down 2-0, the Giants threatened in the seventh and eighth innings, but came up empty in both frames. In the bottom of the seventh, Elliott Blair drew a one-out walk before Ben Turner doubled down the left field line with two outs to put runners on second and third. Carpenter though was able to retire the next hitter, Ydwin Villegas, on a deep fly out to center to end the inning.
In the eighth facing reliever John Keck, Jesus Galindo drew a leadoff walk for San Jose. Chuckie Jones followed with a high fly ball down the right field line that was dropped by Sean Dwyer for an error. The miscue allowed Galindo to advance to second while Jones, the potential tying run, was safe at first. Keck, however, settled down to record three consecutive swinging strikeouts of Mitch Delfino, Blake Miller and Brian Ragira to finish the inning and keep the score at 2-0.
In the bottom of the ninth, Turner drew a two-out walk, but Villegas followed with a fly out to right to end the game.
Keck, who worked the last two innings, notched his first save of the season.
