Stockton Ports News Release

LANCASTER, Calif. - The Stockton Ports offense, which churned out 51 hits in four games over the weekend versus Bakersfield, made its presence felt on Monday night in their first game with the Lancaster JetHawks. The Ports clubbed a season-high 17 hits en route to an 8-7 win in 10 innings and their season-high seventh straight victory.

The first two Stockton surges came with two outs and the bases empty. In the first inning, Matt Olson drew a walk, Ryon Healy singled, and Renato Nunez hit a two-run double to center to give the Ports a 2-0 lead. JetHawks starter Gonzalo Senudo ran into more two-out trouble in the fourth. Healy reached on an infield single and Nunez once again doubled to right-center to plate Healy. Bruce Maxwell followed with a triple to center that scored Nunez and stretched the Stockton lead to 4-0.

Sanudo received a no-decision, going four innings and allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out five.

Ports starter Jake Sanchez, making his California League debut, kept the JetHawks off the scoreboard through the first three innings. In the fourth, Teoscar Hernandez led off and reached on a fielding error committed by Chad Pinder. After Conrad Gregor singled, Rio Ruiz hit a three-run homer to center to bring Lancaster to within a run at 4-3. Those were the only three runs allowed by Sanchez who had an otherwise strong debut with Stockton, going six innings and allowing four hits while striking out five.

Stockton increased its lead back to four runs in the seventh facing JetHawks reliever Kyle Westwood. With runners at second and third and nobody out, Healy delivered a two-run single to left to make it 6-3. After Healy was thrown out trying to stretch his single to a double, Nunez came up and hit a solo homer to center to make it a 7-3 Stockton advantage. The runs in the seventh were the only runs allowed by Westwood in four innings of relief for Lancaster.

The JetHawks surged back in the seventh facing Ports reliever Michael Ynoa. After a double, hit batter and single loaded the bases with nobody out, Tony Kemp hit a sacrifice fly to center to cut the lead to 7-4. Hernandez and Gregor followed with back-to-back RBI singles to bring the JetHawks to within a run at 7-6. Ynoa allowed three runs on four hits in his lone inning of work.

Jeremy Barfield (4-1) took over in the eighth and surrendered a leadoff home run to Brandon Meredith that tied the game at 7-7. It would be the only run surrendered by Barfield in two innings of relief as he went on to pitch a scoreless ninth and pick up the victory.

Jamaine Cotton (0-1) entered the game in the ninth for the JetHawks and pitched around a single and a walk in his first inning of relief. In the 10th, Cotton allowed a leadoff triple to Bobby Crocker. Boog Powell, making his California League debut, came up next and came through with his third hit of the night, an RBI single to center to score Crocker and give the Ports an 8-7 lead.

Cotton suffered the loss as he allowed one run on three hits in two innings of relief.

Kris Hall (SV, 3) set the side down in order in the bottom of the 10th to record his third save in as many chances.

The Ports and JetHawks play the middle game of their three-game series on Tuesday at The Hangar. Tim Atherton (5-2, 4.91 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Lancaster right-hander Matt Heidenreich (2-0, 2.08 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. PDT.
