Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC --- Jesus Medrano scored on a 12th inning wild pitch as Carolina regained the sole Eastern Division lead with five days remaining.
Carolina (34-28) defeated the Smokies 4-3 on Wednesday night to break a first-place tie as Kevin Sprague threw a curveball to the backstop with two outs. The Mudcats, who have eight games in five days to wrap up the regular season, have a one-game lead over Tennessee, which plays five in the next five days.
Ryan Jorgensen (HR, 6, 3-5, RBI) hit a homer and singled twice to pace the Mudcats offense. Jorgensen was thrown out at home earlier in the 12th inning on a near game-winning double by Medrano (2-3, R, 2B).
Tennessee (34-30) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth before Jorgensen's homer against Chris Narveson in the lower half of the inning.
Chris Duncan hit a pinch two-run homer against Nic Ungs (ND, 7IP, 8H, 3ER, 1W, 2K) in the seventh putting Tennessee ahead 3-1.
Drew Niles (1-4, RBI) singled in Chip Ambres (0-4, R, 3W, 2SB) in the seventh, then Chris Ashby (1-5, R, W) scored from second on a pinch-single by Medrano, whose ball was overrun by left fielder Matt Lemanczyk.
Carolina stranded 17 runners in the game, thanks in large part to 12 walks by Smokies pitchers.
Mike Flannery (W, 7-3, 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0W, 0K) registered the win with one scoreless inning, after Sean Fesh (ND, 3IP, 1H, 0R, 0W, 3K) matched a season-high three shutout innings.
Carolina plays its final regular-season home game Thursday night at Five County with Denny Bautista (4-4, 3.54) starting at 7:15 PM ET against Smokies LH Juan Pena (4-5, 3.53).
