Myrtle Beach, SC--- The Myrtle Beach Pelicans returned the favor and shutout the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 1-0, in front of 2,425 at Coastal Federal Field on Wednesday night.
Wilmington went 4-3 on their final regular-season road trip and concluded the 2003 season with a league-best 40-30 road record.
Brian Bass (9-8) allowed one earned run on two hits over seven innings and took the tough-luck loss in the series finale. Bass, who retired eight in a row and 10 in a row at two different points in the game, walked one and struck out four.
Macay McBride (7-8) blanked Wilmington over seven-shutout innings. McBride scattered five hits, walked one, and struck out three in his first win of the season in four starts against Wilmington.
The Pelicans scored the lone run of the game in the first inning against Bass. Gregor Blanco led off with an infield single, stole second base, and scored on an error by Ruben Gotay.
Bass did not allow another hit until surrendering a one-out single to Scott Thorman in the seventh inning.
Trae McGill worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning for the Rocks, who have four games remaining in the regular season.
Manny Acosta worked two scoreless innings to register his first save of the season. Acosta allowed a leadoff single to Ruben Gotay in the ninth inning, but got Paul Phillips to hit into a double play. Justin Cowan grounded out to the shortstop for the final out of the game.
The Rocks have a scheduled off day on Thursday and begin a four-game series with the Potomac Cannons on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Kyle Middleton (11-8, 2.52) goes to the hill in the opener.
