Myrtle Beach, SC--- Zach McClellan tossed the first complete-game shutout of his professional career in Wilmington's 4-0 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Tuesday night.
McClellan allowed four hits and three walks over nine innings and notched his eighth win of the season for the Blue Rocks. The 24-year-old retired 11 in a row before allowing a one-out single in the ninth inning to Scott Thorman. However, he came back and retired the next two hitters to finish off the complete-game effort.
The Rocks broke a scoreless tie against losing pitcher Dan Meyer (3-5) in the fourth inning. John Draper, who went 2-for-4 on the night, drove in the first run with a two-out singe against losing pitcher Dan Meyer (3-5).
Wilmington added to their lead with two runs, both unearned, against Meyer in the fifth inning. J.D. Alleva and James Shanks both scored on a two-out error by shortstop Isaac Iorg.
The Rocks added a run in the seventh inning on a run-scoring single by Justin Cowan, who has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games.
The Rocks and Pelicans conclude their four-game series on Wednesday night at 6:05 p.m. Brain Bass (9-7, 2.91) goes up against Macay McBride (8-8, 3.08).
Game Notes:
Darren Fenster went 0-for-5 on Tuesday night and had his season-high, nine-game hitting streak come to an end.
The Rocks pitching staff has allowed only two earned runs over the last 36 innings and have tossed three shutouts over the last four games.
The Rocks are 4-2 on their current seven-game road trip and have not had a losing road trip during the second half of the season.
Wilmington leads the CL with 15 shutouts on the season.
