Carolina Mudcats News Release
Pearl, MS --- Carolina pushed across three unearned runs in the seventh inning and held off Mississippi to win the series finale 4-3 at Trustmark Park on Tuesday night.
The Mudcats, who finished their 10-day road trip 4-5, broke a 1-1 game thanks to a pair of errors by Jordan Kreke to set up the game-jarring inning. With the bases loaded after two errors and a walk, starter Jose Lugo (L, 0-4) walked in the tie-breaking run, then after a pitching change, Cody Puckett delivered a two-run single to make it 4-1.
In the last of the seventh, winning pitcher Curtis Partch (W, 1-0) retired the first two hitters before allowing a pair of bloop singles and an infield hit as the Braves cut the deficit to 4-2. Justin Freeman entered for Partch, walking a hitter to load the bases before permitting a single to right by Willie Cabrera, however after one run scored, Bill Rhinehart threw out the tying run to maintain Carolina's 4-3 lead.
Donnie Joseph (S, 5) recorded his third save of the trip, pitching a scoreless ninth.
The Mudcats return home six back of first place Chattanooga with 25 to play in the regular season. James Avery starts the homestand opener against the Montgomery Biscuits at 7:15 PM ET.
