
Lookouts Destroy Barons, 16-2

Hoover, AL - Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Kyle Russell combined for two home runs and eight RBI as the Chattanooga Lookouts (27-18, 62-53) destroyed the Birmingham Barons (17-29, 57-59), 16-2, Wednesday night at Chatanooga's AT&T Park.
Birmingham took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Alden Carrithers drew a leadoff walk, sprinted to second on a botched pickoff attempt and advanced to third on Jose Martinez's fly out. Christian Marrero lined a RBI single to right field that plated Carrithers for the game's first run.
The Lookouts knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning after Elian Herrera reached on an infield single and sprinted to third on Alex Castellanos' double to left field. Herrera would score on a ground out by Scott Van Slyke.
Chattanooga's offense exploded in the second inning with eight runs as the Lookouts captured a 9-1 advantage in the frame. A three-run home run by Cavazos-Galvez and grand slam by Russell highlighted the eight-run inning that sent 13 Lookouts to the plate.
In the bottom of the third inning the Lookouts extended their lead to 12 behind a leadoff solo home run by Cavazos-Galvez a two-run triple by Herrera and Castellanos' sacrifice fly, 13-1.
The Lookouts took a 14-1 lead in the fourth inning when Corey Smith smacked a leadoff triple to right field and scampered home after a fielding error by Barons right fielder Jose Martinez on a ball struck by Cavazos-Galvez.
Jon Gilmore lined a leadoff double to left field in the top of the sixth inning and raced to third on Seth Loman's single to right field. Jake Oester drove home Gilmore on a groundout as the Barons scored their second run, 14-2.
Chattanooga added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when Van Slyke doubled and Travis Denker drew a walk. Following a wild pitch that scored Van Slyke, a RBI single by Smith drove home Denker as the Lookouts' lead expanded to 14, 16-2.
Jason Bour lined a leadoff double in the ninth inning, raced to third base on Greg Paiml's single to right field and scored on a ground out for the final run of the game, 16-3.
Stephen Fife (2-0) earned the victory for the Lookouts as the right-hander tossed 6.0 IP with two runs (one earned) on 7 hits, 2 walks and 8 strikouts.
Charlie Shirek (3-6) received the loss after the Barons right-hander surrendered 12 runs (seven earned) on 11 hits, 2 walks and 1 strikeout in 2.0 IP.
The Barons Chattanooga Lookouts, Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, play game two of the five-game series Thursday night, with first pitch set for 6:15 p.m. (CDT) at Chattanooga's AT&T Park. Birmingham turns to southpaw Hector Santiago (4-4, 4.65) while Chattanooga sends right-hander Will Savage (12-3, 3.38) to the mound.
