MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs has released its 2012 schedule. The new season of Southern League action will commence on Thursday, April 5 and conclude on Monday, September 3.
The 140-game schedule will contain a split-season format, with the first half ending Sunday, June 17. The five-game series concept introduced for the 2006 season will be in place for a seventh consecutive campaign.
The Pensacola Blue Wahoos will play their inaugural season in the Southern League as the Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds in a newly built stadium. They replace the Carolina Mudcats, who will continue to play in Zebulon, North Carolina in the Carolina League. With Pensacola as a new addition to the South Division, the Birmingham Barons will compete in the North Division in 2012.
The Southern League will take its traditional three-day All-Star break beginning on Monday, June 18. The Tennessee Smokies will host the 2012 Southern League All-Star Game on Tuesday, June 19. It will be the league's third All-Star Game at Smokies Park and the Smokies' first mid-summer classic since 2002, when the Southern League All- Stars East played the Southern League All-Stars West.
"I'm very excited about the 2012 schedule and hope it brings both season-long competition and excitement to our teams and affiliates, as well as our fans," Southern League President Don Mincher said.
