Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - Down 3-0 to the BayBears early, the Mississippi Braves roared back in the later frames to defeat the BayBears, 5-4, in the opener of a five-game series on Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Patrick Corbin put the BayBears (68-47, 30-15) on top in the bottom of the second when he ripped a single to right to score Ed Easley. Easley extended the BayBears' cushion with a two-run homer off Chris Cody in the bottom of the fourth.
Corbin carried a four-hit shutout into the sixth but was unable to get through it as the Braves (47-69, 22-24) grabbed a couple of runs on one-out base hits by Ed Lucas and Mycal Jones. Bryan Woodall worked up the last two outs in the sixth, but he coughed up a two-run homer to Ernesto Mejia in the seventh to give the Braves a 4-3 lead.
Rowdy Hardy (3-4) allowed the BayBears to quickly even the score in the bottom of the seventh as Jake Elmore tripled with one out and came home on a base knock from pinch-hitter Dan Kaczrowski.
Clay Zavada (1-2) entered with the score even at 4-4 in the top of the eighth but surrendered a lead-off single to Ed Lucas, who advanced to second on a sac bunt from Mycal Jones. Braeden Schlehuber capitalized by knocking home Lucas to put the Braves on top while Benino Pruneda (S, 8) tossed two scoreless frames as he quelled a BayBears' scoring opportunity in the bottom of the ninth by striking out A.J. Pollock before Daryle Ward flied out to end the ballgame with the tying tally on third.
The BayBears lead in the South Division by 7 games over the second-place Biscuits with their magic number to clinch a South Division second half crown at 19. It's a Thirsty Thursday with $1 Buds and Pepsi available between 6 and 8 p.m. The BayBears will be home through Sunday in a five-game set that features PULSE Pro-Life Night on Friday and the Turner Walk on Saturday. After Greg Sexton lined out to third, Cole Figueroa drew a walk to bring up Henry Wrigley. Wrigley singled home Beckham while Kyeong Kang finished the rally by slamming a three-run homer to make it 6-0.
Shane Dyer (6-7) was solid for 7.1 innings, but he let up a couple of runs in the fourth. Ryan Wheeler stroked a double down the left field line and scored on a three-bagger by Marc Krauss. Krauss crossed the dish when Taylor Harbin lined out to right on a diving catch by Kang.
Montgomery pulled away with three in the bottom of the fifth including a two-run jack from John Shelby. Figueroa added a sac fly in the sixth to put the Biscuits up by eight. The BayBears (67-45, 29-13) rallied briefly in the eighth as Wheeler drew a bases-loaded walk to score Ollie Linton but Krauss punched out and Harbin bounced into a fielder's choice to end the threat.
The BayBears lead in the South Division by 7.5 games over the second-place Biscuits, and the two squads will battle in the fourth of a five-game set on Monday night at 7:05. Right-hander Wes Roemer (8-6) starts for the BayBears against fellow right-hander Alex Colome (1-1).
