Kane County Cougars News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa- Shawon Dunston Jr. homered off rehabbing Ricky Nolasco and Ben Carhart's name might be the most talked about after Sunday's marathon event between the Cougars (29-20, 74-45) and Cedar Rapids Kernels (28-21, 59-60). In a 15-inning contest, the Cougars needed one of their catchers to take the mound for a 7-4 victory at Perfect Game Field.
During the four-game series, the Cougars lost a pair of relievers in a big league trade. Pitchers were also used frequently in a series that consisted of three one-run ballgames. Tied 4-4 in the thirteenth inning, infielder/catcher Ben Carhart started warming up. If it weren't for Jasvir Rakkar's scoreless three frames, Carhart might have taken the mound earlier. The utility man took the mound in fourteenth inning and only suffered a one-out walk to Max Murphy, setting up a chance for the offense.
With two runners on, Jacob Rogers provided his pitcher Carhart with some offense. Rogers connected on a two-run triple to break the 4-4 tie and hand the Cougars their first lead in eight innings. Cael Brockmeyer punched in another run with a double to plate Rogers.
Carhart was three outs away from his first professional win as a pitcher. After a two-out walk to Chad Christensen, the right-hander got Mitch Garver to ground out for his second scoreless, hitless inning and a record of 1-0.
Prior to Rakkar, Francisco Carrillo tossed two and one-third innings of scoreless baseball, stranding five base runners.
Dunston's home run came in the second inning. It was one of his two hits against Minnesota Twins' rehabbing pitcher Nolasco. The Cougars grabbed three runs against the big leaguer as Dunston also scored in the first and Jeimer Candelario doubled home Brockmeyer in the fourth.
Chris Mazza (3-3) took the loss giving up the three runs in the fifteenth.
After enjoying their only scheduled off day in the month of August, the Cougars welcome in the Quad Cities River Bandits for a three-game series beginning Tuesday. Jen-Ho Tseng (6-1, 2.47) will make the start for the Cougars against Quad Cities Kevin Comer (1-3, 4.35). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com.
