Leyba, Whitecaps outlast Lugs in 11, 3-2

LANSING, Mich. - An RBI single by Domingo Leyba in the eleventh inning lifted the West Michigan Whitecaps (41-19, 72-47) to a 3-2 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (21-28, 53-65) on Sunday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The Lugnuts dropped three of the four games in the series, and have now lost ten of their last thirteen overall.

After a pair of walks by reliever Phil Kish (Loss, 5-5) with one out in the eleventh, Leyba bounced a single into center field to score Raph Rhymes from second and give the Whitecaps a 3-2 lead.

West Michigan reliever Zac Reininger (Win, 3-2) struck out the side in order in the bottom of the eleventh to close out the afternoon.

After the Whitecaps took a 2-0 lead in the fifth, a sacrifice fly by right fielder Derrick Loveless closed to gap to one run in the sixth, and an RBI single by first baseman Justin Atkinson tied the game in the seventh.

West Michigan starting pitcher Chad Green worked 6-1 innings, allowing a pair of unearned runs on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Lansing starter Miguel Castro departed the game after an apparent injury with two outs in the fifth, allowing one run on two hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Lansing reliever Brady Dragmire worked 2.1 scoreless innings with one strikeout.

Catcher Mike Reeves finished the afternoon 3-for-4, scoring a run.

Following an off-day on Monday, the Lugnuts continue the seven-game home stand on Tuesday night with the opener of a three-game series against Fort Wayne. Right-hander Starlyn Suriel (1-1, 2.12) will start for the Lugnuts, with righty Ronald Herrera (5-7, 3.82) on the mound for the TinCaps.
