Medina's Two-Run Homer Helps Chiefs to 6-4 Win

PEORIA, IL- Rafael Medina blasted a two-run home run in the fourth inning to propel the Peoria Chiefs to a 6-4 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs record is 25-24 in the second half and 62-56 overall.

The Chiefs scored an unearned run in the first inning against rehabbing Brewers pitcher Wei-Chung Wang. Vaughn Bryan led off with a walk and CJ McElroy Jr. hit a ground ball to short that went through the legs of Steven Halcomb and Bryan went to third. After an out, Justin Ringo pulled a ground ball to second base for an RBI ground out and a 1-0 Chiefs lead.

The Timber Rattlers got two runs in the second off Kyle Helisek. Clint Coulter began the inning with a walk and Rafael Neda singled with one out. Johnny Davis walked to load the bases and after an infield pop out, Jose Pena blooped a two-run single to left giving Wisconsin a 2-1 lead.

The Chiefs reclaimed the lead with two runs in the third. The first two batters were retired before McElroy singled to right and stole second. Carson Kelly followed with a line drive single to right to even the score. Ringo hit a check-swing grounder to first and hustled to beat the throw for a single. Ronald Castillo singled to right as Kelly scored from second to give the Chiefs a 3-2 lead.

Peoria added two more runs in the fourth against Barrett Astin. Cesar Valera led off with a walk and Rafael Medina drilled a home run to left for a 5-2 Chiefs advantage. It's Medina's second home run with the Chiefs.

Wisconsin got a home run of their own in the fifth. Pena began the inning by hitting one just over the wall in left for his ninth home run of the season and a 5-3 Chiefs lead. The Rattlers scored again in the sixth with a David Denson leadoff double and Kevin Herget replaced Helisek. Herget got Neda to ground out to first as Denson took third and Davis hit a sac fly to right to cut the Chiefs lead to 5-4.

The Chiefs got a run back in the bottom of the sixth against Chris Razo. Valera again led off with a walk and Medina singled him to third. On a 0-2 pitch, Richy Pedroza hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Valera for a 6-4 Chiefs lead.

Helisek (1-0) pitched five-plus innings allowing four runs on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts to earn the win. Herget tossed three scoreless innings on two hits. Kyle Barraclough worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save.
