Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Arkansas Travelers scored four times in the top of the tenth inning, beating the Springfield Cardinals by a final of 7-3 on Wednesday night at Hammons Field.

Kendry Morales picked up a one-out three-run double to break a 3-3 tie in the tenth inning, his second game-winning hit in as many nights. Mike Eylward's two-out single plated Morales for the fourth run of the inning, as Arkansas took a commanding 7-3 lead off Cards reliever Jeremy Cook (3-5).

After tying the game in the seventh inning with three runs, the Cards were poised to win it in the ninth inning. Gabe Johnson reached on an error by Travs shortstop Erick Aybar in the ninth inning. Brendan Ryan then laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving Johnson to second base. On the play, Travs reliever David Austen's throw to second base was late, allowing runners to reach first and second with no outs. After Dan Moylan laid down another sac bunt, Kevin Estrada was walked intentionally, loading the bases. With one out and the bases loaded, Shaun Boyd shot a hard ground ball in the direction of Aybar, who came home to get the second out of the inning. With the bases still loaded, Travis Hanson hit a come-backer to the hill, which Austen (3-1) turned into a 1-3 put-out.

The Cards had a ferocious rally to tie the game in the seventh inning. Trailing 3-0, Gabe Johnson started the rally with a one-out walk. After Brendan Ryan's double put runners at second and third, Dan Moylan picked up an RBI groundout to make it 3-1. Kevin Estrada followed with an RBI double, making it 3-2. Boyd tied the game with a two-out hit to center, bringing in Estrada to tie the game at 3-3.

Cards starter Jeremy Cummings allowed three runs, just two earned in seven innings of work. The Travs got an unearned run in the first, and then solo homers from Mike Eylward and Greg Porter, taking a 3-0 lead by the fourth inning.

Travs starter Steven Shell took a shutout into the seventh inning, but allowed three earned runs over seven total innings.

Springfield falls to 14-18 in the second half and are now 3.5 back of Wichita in the East Division. The Cardinals hit the road for their longest road trip of the year, 13 games over 14 days. Jordan Pals (5-7) takes the hill in the opening game of a five-game set against the Tulsa Drillers on Thursday night. Jon Asahina will go for the Drillers, with game time slated for 7:05 from Tulsa. The Cardinals return home on Thursday, August 11 to face the Midland RockHounds. Tickets are always available at (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
