Springfield Cardinals News Release

In the quickest game of the 2005 season, the Tulsa Drillers blanked the Springfield Cardinals by a final score of 2-0 on Thursday night at Drillers Stadium. In just one hour and 51 minutes, the Drillers sent the Cards to their third straight loss, dropping them to 14-19 in the second half.

Jon Asahina became the Texas League's first 11-game winner, also becoming the first Tulsa Driller pitcher this year to fire a complete game shutout. Asahina (11-6) allowed just five hits over nine scoreless frames, striking out eight Cards in the process.

Jordan Pals got the tough-luck loss for the Cards, taking a two-hit shutout into the sixth inning. Pals gave up back-to-back homers to Tony Miller and Jayson Nix with one out in the sixth though, as the Drillers took a 2-0 lead. Pals (5-8) went seven innings, allowing two runs on just five hits. Andy Cavazos worked a perfect eighth for the Springfield bullpen.

The two runs would prove to be enough for the Drillers, as Asahina got out of an eighth inning jam, stranding two runners in scoring position. After a one-out walk to Dan Moylan, Kevin Estrada singled to left. Papo Bolivar pinch-hit for Jordan Pals, grounding out to first baseman Corey Slavik. On the play, Moylan went to third and Estrada moved to second, bringing Shaun Boyd to the plate with an opportunity to tie the game. Asahina fanned Boyd though, keeping the Cards off the scoreboard and the 2-0 lead intact.

In the ninth, the Cards went 1-2-3, as Brendan Ryan, Tyler Minges and Travis Hanson all grounded out.

The Cards continue their 13-game road trip on Friday night in Tulsa. Randy Leek (10-6) takes on Ubaldo Jimenez (1-3) with game time scheduled for 7:05pm. The Cardinals return to Hammons Field on Thursday, August 11 to take on the Midland RockHounds. Tickets are always available at (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
