Arkansas Travelers News Release

Hammons Field, Springfield, MO – Aaron Herr knocked in the winning run in the ninth inning with his third single of the night leading the Springfield Cardinals (19-22) to a 4-3 victory over the Arkansas Travelers (21-20). The Cardinals were set up in the ninth thanks to a hit batter, a throwing error, a passed ball and two intentional walks. The Travs committed three errors and went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Herr's game-winning hit capped the Cardinals' second straight comeback victory. After coming back from four runs down on Thursday, Springfield came back from a two-run deficit on Friday. The Travs have now dropped six of seven games.

Travs reliever RHP Matt Wilhite (1-1) suffered the loss in relief of LHP Daniel Davidson. Davidson set down the first 14 hitters of the game and finished with 6.1 innings pitched, three runs (two earned) on four hits, no walks and a strikeout. Springfield RHP Josh Kinney (4-1) earned the win with a scoreless ninth in relief of RHP Jeremy Cook. Cook tossed eight innings and scattered nine hits, allowed three runs (two earned), one walk and two strikeouts.

With the game tied in the ninth at 3-3, Wilhite hit Tyler Minges to start the inning. RHP Aaron Pullin relieved, but Minges advanced to second base when C Mike Napoli threw wild to first base on an attempted pickoff. Then after the first out, Pullin was in the middle of an intentional walk to Robinson Cancel when Napoli dropped a pitch to send the winning run to third base. Two intentional walks loaded the bases and set up Herr's game-winning hit.

The Travs got ahead of Springfield for the third straight game. Reggie Willits singled to begin the night and stole second base then went to third on a passed ball. 2B Alberto Callaspo singled to right for a 1-0 lead. Callaspo then went to third base when Erick Aybar's grounder to second was booted by Herr. David Gates grounded into a double play to score Callaspo for a 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals got their first runner on base with two outs in the fifth inning on a single by Papo Bolivar. Herr singled Bolivar to second base and then Aybar threw wild on a groundball to bring Bolivar home.

Arkansas 3B Greg Porter began the seventh inning with a home run (2) to right field for a 3-1 lead.

Cards 3B Travis Hanson singled to start the seventh inning and Bolivar doubled him home with one out to chase Davidson from the game. Wilhite relieved and gave up a game-tying single to Herr. The Cards attempted a double steal with runners at first and third base, but Wilhite caught Reid Gorecki in a rundown and he was tagged out by Aybar. Herr was tagged out at home immediately after.

Time of game was 2:25 and the paid attendance was 7,749.

The fourth game of this series is Saturday night. The Travelers have RHP Steven Shell (1-3, 3.96 ERA) pitching against Springfield LHP Oscar Alvarez (3-2, 2.79 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:10 p.m.
