Springfield Cardinals News Release

Aaron Herr's third hit of the night drove home Tyler Minges from third base, giving the Springfield Cardinals a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Arkansas Travelers on Friday night at Hammons Field.

In the bottom of the ninth with the game tied at 3-3, Tyler Minges was hit by pitcher Matt Wilhite (1-1). Aaron Pullin was then brought in to face Travis Hanson. With Hanson at the plate, Catcher Mike Napoli attempted to pick Tyler Minges off of first base, but after receiving the pitch, Napoli threw the ball down the first base line, allowing Minges to move to second. Hanson would then fly out to left field for the first out of the inning. Robinson Cancel was then going to be issued an intentional walk. On the 2-0 pitch to Cancel though, the ball was in the dirt, allowing Minges to move to third. After Cancel was walked, Papo Bolivar was also issued an intentional walk, loading the bases for Aaron Herr. Herr drove the first pitch he saw from Pullin into left-center field, scoring Minges with the game-winning run.

The Travs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Jeremy Cook. Reggie Willits led off the game with a single and eventually scored on an RBI hit from Alberto Callaspo. Callaspo would reach third on an error, then score as David Gates hit into a double-play. Cook would settle down, working five consecutive scoreless innings to keep the Cards in it.

Springfield didn't register a base-runner until the fifth inning against Daniel Davidson. Papo Bolivar's two-out single was the first man to reach base. Herr followed Bolivar with a single of his own, putting runners at first and second with two outs. Reid Gorecki then chopped one to the shortstop Eric Aybar. Aybar threw off-balance to first, allowing the ball to skip away from the first baseman Mike Eylward. On the play, Papo Bolivar scored, making it 2-1.

Greg Porter got that run back for the Travs, hammering a solo homer to right-center field in the seventh inning for a 3-1 lead.

The Cards would get even though in the bottom of the seventh, scoring twice to tie the game at 3-3. Bolivar's RBI double knocked in Travis Hanson, who singled to open the inning. Aaron Herr followed with a single to left that got away from left fielder Chris Morris. On the play, Bolivar scored to tie the game at 3-3. Later in the inning, with runners at first and third with only one out, the Cards appeared to take the lead. Reid Gorecki was caught in a run down between first and second. Second baseman Alberto Callaspo would tag Gorecki for the second out, then throw home in an attempt to throw out Herr trying to score. Herr appeared to get the hand around the catcher Mike Napoli, but instead Herr was called out, sending over 7,700 fans at Hammons Field into an eruption of boos.

Cook was outstanding, receiving a no-decision by working a season-high eight innings, allowing three runs, only two earned, on nine hits. Davidson also received a no-decision, going 6.1 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on just four hits. Josh Kinney (4-1) earned the win by tossing a perfect ninth.

The Cardinals have now won two straight, moving their record to 19-22. Arkansas falls to 21-20 with the loss. The Cards look to make it three straight on Saturday night, sending Oscar Alvarez (3-2) to the mound. Arkansas will counter with Steven Shell (1-4). Game time on Saturday at Hammons Field is set for 6:10. 1,000 kids age 15 and under will receive a free wooden bat thanks to Ozarks Coca-Cola. Gates open at 5:10 and plenty of tickets remain by calling (417) 863-2143. The Cards finish their ten-game home stand on Sunday afternoon with a 1:10 game at Hammons Field.
