Harris, Fruto combine on four-hit shutout

Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(CORPUS CHRISTI, TX) â San Antonio's scheduled starter Friday night, Jon Huber, was unable to pitch, still under the weather with a case of strep throat. Where's a general practitioner when you need him?
Jeff Harris, called upon in a spot starting role, tossed seven shutout innings in Huber's stead to lead the Missions to a 4-0 victory over the Hooks in front of a crowd of 7,317 at Whataburger Field. The Missions have now won all seven meetings between the two clubs this season.
Harris (5-0), who tossed one inning of shutout relief Wednesday to get the win in the first game of this series, scattered four singles over his seven innings Friday night. He did not walk a batter and he struck out seven. Emiliano Fruto worked two scoreless frames to complete the whitewash.
Hooks' starter Jason Hirsh (4-4) pitched well but suffered the loss. He was touched for four runs, two of them unearned, on four hits and one walk over six innings. Hirsh also fanned seven and finished by retiring the last six batters he faced.
The Missions, now 22-19, tallied unearned runs in the first and second innings. In the fourth, San Antonio stretched its lead to 3-0 on Jesse Hoorelbeke's second RBI single of the night. Jaime Bubela scored from third after getting hit by a pitch to start the inning.
The visitors tallied their final run when Gary Harris opened the fifth with an opposite-field line drive homer to left â his second homer of the series and the season. Like the Hooks, the Missions managed just four hits, but all four San Antonio safeties produced runs.
LHP Mark McLemore (4-2, 2.59) will try to reverse Corpus Christi's fortunes when the two teams meet again Saturday night at Whataburger Field. The Missions will counter with LHP Bobby Livingston (3-2, 3.30). Saturday, the first 2,500 fans through the gates will receive a Hooks' replica road cap courtesy of Cheniere Energy. Saturday's game gets under way at 7:05 pm, with the gates set to open at 5:30.
