May 30, 2005 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release

Coming into Monday night, the Springfield Cardinals had just twenty games remaining in the first half schedule. The Cardinals opened an 11-game home stand with a much-needed 4-3 win over the Midland RockHounds on Monday night at Hammons Field. Papo Bolivar's run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning snapped a 3-3 tie, as the Cards would never look back. Springfield has now won five of their last eight games and is now 3-1 against the Midland RockHounds on the year. They improve to 24-27 overall, eight games back of the Tulsa Drillers in the East Division.

Anthony Rawson (2-2) worked 1.1 innings of perfect relief, in earning his second win of the year. Rawson struck out the side in the ninth, including the Texas League's leading hitter, Andre Ethier to end it.

Juan Diaz homered for the second time in as many days, launching a two-run shot down the left field line in the fifth against Midland starter Drew Dickinson, giving the Cards a 2-1 lead.

Midland got the equalizer in the sixth and one more in the seventh, taking a 3-2 lead. Jeremy Brown's two-out single in the sixth, scored Omar Quintanilla, tying the game at 2-2. In the seventh inning with runners at first and second and two outs, Andre Ethier rolled a ground ball to the left of Milko Jaramillo. Jaramillo made the stop, but his throw to first got away from first baseman Juan Diaz, who was charged with the error. On the play, Mark Kiger scored from second to give Midland a 3-2 advantage.

Aaron Herr saw just one pitch in the bottom of the seventh, lining Nick Brannon's first pitch into the left field bullpen for his fourth homer of the year, tying the game at 3-3.

In the eighth, Travis Hanson opened the frame with a walk and was sacrificed to second base on Robinson Cancel's bunt. After an intentional walk to Tyler Minges, Papo Bolivar's single to right field off Brannon (1-1) scored the go-ahead run, putting the Cards ahead to stay at 4-3.

Cardinals starter Jeremy Cummings worked four innings in his Springfield debut. He allowed just one run on one hit, while striking out six and walking two. Cummings took the roster spot of RHP Josh Axelson, who was sent to Palm Beach before Monday's game.

The Cardinals send Oscar Alvarez (3-2) to the mound on Tuesday night as the 11-game home stand continues. Midland goes with Jason Windsor (0-0), who makes his first start of the year for the RockHounds. Game time on Tuesday night at Hammons Field is 7:10pm. Tickets are available at (417) 863-2143 and online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
