Arkansas Travelers News Release
Citibank Ballpark, Midland, TX â Midland OF Steve Stanley and 3B Lloyd Turner each knocked in three runs to lead the RockHounds (32-18) to an 8-5 victory over the Arkansas Travelers (26-23). Midland used a five-run rally in the fourth inning to turn the game around after Arkansas had a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. After winning four in a row, the Travs dropped three of four in Midland. The Tulsa Drillers staged a ninth-inning comeback 3-2 victory over Corpus Christi to send the Travs 4.5 games in back of first place. Continuing his power surge, Travs C Mike Napoli homered (7) for the third straight game and is on a seven-game hitting streak. 2B Alberto Callaspo went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Travs LHP Tim Bittner (1-4) took the loss and left the game in the fifth inning surrendering seven runs (six earned) on ten hits in 4.1 innings.
With the Travs leading 3-2, Midland sent nine hitters to the plate in the sixth inning. The rally started on a line drive one-out single by Brian Stavisky followed by a bloop single to left by Jason Perry. Jeremy Brown then laced a single to right field tying the game at 3-3. Omar Quintanilla then grounded slowly to second base with Brown forced out at second base. Quintanilla beat the relay throw allowing Perry to score the winning run. Francis Gomez then topped a grounder to third for an infield single. Stanley followed with an RBI single to right field, then Lloyd Turner knocked in two runs with a triple to right-center field capping the inning for a 7-3 Midland lead.
The Travs scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning because Erick Aybar reached on a fielding error by 1B Jeremy Brown. Callaspo singled to send Aybar to second base, and a fly out by Napoli pushed the runners to second and third. Greg Porter brought the runners home for a 2-0 lead with a two-out single to right field.
Leading off the top of the third inning, Travs DH Ryan Leahy singled to center. A single by Aybar pushed Leahy to third base and he scored when Tommy Murphy grounded to second base and beat a relay throw on an attempted double play.
An error by 2B Alberto Callaspo opened the door for the RockHounds in the bottom of the third inning. After a one out single by Quintanilla, Gomez hit a slow grounder to the second base hole. Callaspo had an out at first base, but threw to second base late. The ball got away from Aybar allowing Quintanilla to go to third base while Gomez went to second. Stanley singled to center bringing Quintanilla home. Then Lloyd Turner beat a relay throw on a double play attempt that allowed Gomez to score from third base cutting the Travs' lead to 3-2.
After Midland's big fourth inning, Aybar drew a walk to begin the fifth inning and then stole second base. On a pitch in the dirt, Aybar wandered too far off second base and was caught in a rundown and tagged out at third. Callaspo followed with a double to center and then scored when Napoli cleared the center-field wall for a two-run homer cutting Midland's lead to 7-5.
The Travs couldn't muster any offense against Midland reliever RHP Shawn Kohn, who tossed three perfect innings. Travs RHP Mark O'Sullivan pitched 2.2 shutout innings before handing the ball to RHP Jose Arredondo for the eighth. Midland scored a run off Arredondo on a single and three walks, with Stanley taking four pitches for a bases-loaded walk.
Time of game was 2:55 and the paid attendance was 2,926.
The Travs start a five-game series in Frisco Monday afternoon. Arkansas plans on LHP Daniel Davidson (5-1, 4.13 ERA) pitching against Frisco RHP Nick Masset (1-6, 7.76 ERA). First pitch is planned for 2:00 p.m.
