
Cardinals Win Over Orioles in Final Home Game of the Season, 5-4

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 24, 2004) â The Johnson City Cardinals defeated the Bluefield Orioles 5-4 in their final game of the season at Howard Johnson Field Tuesday night. The Cardinals now sit at 32-30 overall, while the Orioles are at 27-34.
The Cardinals came out on fire in the first inning with three runs from José Delgado (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Juan Lucena (Valencia, Venezuela), and Chad Gabriel (Norwalk, Calif.). The Orioles would not close in on the Cardinals until the top of the fifth when they would score two runs to bring it to 3-2.
Johnson City would then score two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth before sending it to the Orioles. The Cardinals' runs would come from Mark Broome (Clinton, Miss.) and Billy Becher (Chandler, Ariz.). Cardinals' pitcher Mark Sillman picks up his first save of the year.
The Orioles would then bring in two runs in the top of the ninth but that would not be enough as the inning would come to an end with the 5-4 final score.
Jason John (1-2) picks up the win for the Cardinals, while Alberto Bastardo (1-1) takes the loss for the Orioles.
