Cardinals Win Fourth Straight
July 1, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Jonathan Rodriguez and Michael Ohlman drove in four runs each to lead Springfield past Corpus Christi 11-1 Friday at Whataburger Field before 5,818.
The Cardinals (45-32; 4-3), have won four straight since dropping their first three to open the Texas League second half. The Hooks (51-27; 4-4) suffered consecutive setbacks for the first time since May 28-29.
Francis Martes had little trouble achieving the game's first two outs, but the next six Cardinals reached in a four-run, three-hit, two-walk attack during which he also struck a batter. The big blow was Ohlman's three-run double to deep center field. Paul DeJong's single plated Nick Martini, who walked in the wake of strikeouts by Harrison Bader and Rodriguez.
Martes walked two of the first three men he faced an inning later, but pitched around the trouble by fanning Luke Voit and DeJong.
Martes (5-3) turned the game over to Eric Peterson after two innings, three hits, four walks, and five strikeouts.
Rodriguez's two-out grand slam at the left-field foul pole extended the Springfield lead to 8-0 in the third. Peterson walked Ohlman and yielded singles to Luis Cruz and Bader before the blast. Hooks manager Rodney Linares was ejected for disputing the call.
Cardinals starter Andrew Morales, lifted after three, gave up two hits, two walks, and struck out one. His pitch count was 50 (32).
Chris Perry (two innings), Heath Wyatt (three), and Rowan Wick (one) came out of the bullpen for Springfield. Wyatt (1-1) was awarded the victory.
Springfield pushed runs nine and 10 across in the sixth against Ryan Thompson, Ohlman with an RBI double and Juan Herrera on a ground out.
The Cardinals recorded double plays in the fifth, seventh, and eighth. Corpus Christi shortstop Jack Mayfield had two doubles and the Hooks' lone RBI.
Hooks lefty Evan Grills (2-1) faces Luke Weaver (4-0) in the series finale Saturday at 7:05. Mike Shaw Automotive presents postgame fireworks and Ainsworth Trucking provides patriotic caps to the first 2,000. Ballpark gates open 5:35.
