San Antonio Missions News Release
Friday's contest featured a terrific pitcher's duel early between San Antonio's Seth Simmons and Tulsa's Lisalverto Bonilla.
Simmons' only mistake in his five innings on the bump was Alex Verdugo's homer to lead off the second. The veteran right-hander allowed just four hits and no walks, while striking out a season-high six.
Bonilla did not allow a hit until the fifth when Simmons, of all people, singled up the middle. It was the first career hit for Simmons. San Antonio did not score in the fifth, but finally worked a rally against Bonilla's replacement, Scott Barlow, in the following frame.
The Missions began the bottom of the sixth with singles by Nick Schulz and River Stevens. Gabriel Quintana followed with a well executed sac bunt to move both the runners into scoring position. That brought up Franchy Cordero, who turned the one-run Missions deficit into a one-run lead with a double into the left-field corner.
San Antonio held onto its lead until the eighth when defensive miscues allowed Tulsa to turn the game around. All-Star reliever Adam Cimber allowed the Drillers to plate four runs in the frame on four hits. However, only one of the runs charged to Cimber (2-2) was earned as the Missions committed two crucial errors behind him.
The Missions got one back in the bottom of the eighth against right-hander Chris Anderson, ironically via an error as well. There were six combined errors in the game.
However, Daniel Corcino (2nd save) squashed any San Antonio comeback attempt with a scoreless ninth. Joe Broussard (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Drillers.
San Antonio (3-5, 25-53) resumes its six-game homestand Saturday with the series finale against Tulsa (5-3, 43-35) at 7:05 PM. Dinelson Lamet (1-2, 4.29) will take the hill for the Missions, while the Drillers counter with fellow righty Jeremy Kehrt (1-3, 5.74).
