Springfield Cardinals News Release
North Little Rock, AR - The Springfield Cardinals slugged three home runs to power past the Arkansas Travelers, 6-4, before 6,669 fans at Dickey-Stephens Park on Saturday night. With the win, Springfield remains 2.5 games ahead of the Northwest Arkansas Naturals for 1st place in the North Division First Half Standings.
The Cardinals (23-19) swung in front right out of the gates, striking for three runs in the top of the first inning against RHP Troy Scribner (L, 2-2). A RF Breyvic Valera single with one out and a 1B Luke Voit walk with two outs put two men on with two away for 3B Paul DeJong. DeJong brought everyone home with a towering three-run home run to right-center field, his seventh blast of the year, opening an early 3-0 lead for Springfield. With the three RBIs, DeJong tied 2B Bruce Caldwell for the team lead with 25 RBIs apiece.
After a pair of scoreless innings from RHP Mike Mayers (W, 4-2), the Cardinals added to their lead in the top of the third. Leading off against Scribner, CF Harrison Bader crushed his team-leading eighth home run of the year, a solo shot to left field, increasing the lead to 4-0.
Mayers kept the Travelers (17-25) at bay through his first five scoreless stanzas, but Arkansas got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. After Mayers struck out the frame's first batter, LF Jabari Henry pulled a solo home run to left field, getting the Travs on the board, 4-1.
Arkansas edged closer with another tally in the bottom of the seventh against RHP Chris Perry. SS Angel Rosa led off with a bunt single, before racing around to third base one out later on a single by RF Cal Towey. DH Chad Hinshaw loaded the bases with a walk, before 1B Eric Aguilera skied an RBI sacrifice fly to left field, plating Rosa from third base. Perry, though, dug in and dealt an inning-ending strikeout to Henry, getting the Cardinals out of the jam with a 4-2 lead.
The Cardinals countered with an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning. After a strikeout to start the stanza, RHP Geoff Broussard took over on the mound. His first pitch of the night was promptly hammered over the left field fence by 1B Luke Voit, swinging Springfield back into a three-run lead, 5-2, with his seventh shot of the campaign.
The Travelers, though, refused to go down quietly, coming within one run in the bottom of the eighth. 3B Andrew Daniel opened the inning by being hit by a pitch, before flying all the way in on an RBI triple from CF Bo Way. RHP Ronnie Shaban took over on the mound and induced a fly out from C Stephen McGee, but it was deep enough for the sacrifice fly to bring in Way and slice the Cardinals lead to 5-4.
The Cardinals answered right away with one more in the top of the ninth. DH Collin Radack led off the inning with a walk, before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by C Carson Kelly. One out later, with Bader at bat, a pitch bounced away from C Stephen McGee. The ball charomed off the catcher and Radack sprinted home all the way from second base on the wild pitch, stretching the lead to 6-4.
RHP Josh Lucas (S, 4) took over for the bottom of the ninth and slammed the door with a scoreless final frame, closing the 6-4 win for the Cardinals.
