"Old School" Night at the Ballpark: We're Going Streaking
May 21, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release
In the comedy classic "Old School," Will Ferrell's character thinks streaking is sensational. The Corpus Christi Hooks agree; the RockHounds, not so much. The Hooks rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the RockHounds, 4-3, in 10 innings on Friday night at Security Bank Ballpark. The come from behind victory win gave the Hooks a franchise record 11-game win streak and pushed the RockHounds' losing streak to seven.
Two newcomers ... Nick Tanielu and Alejandro Garcia ... were front and center for Corpus Christi, each playing in his first game for the Hooks.
Tanielu's two-run home run in the seventh tied the game at 3-3 and Garcia's two-out double in the 10th turned into the game-winning run on an RBI single from Teoscar Hernandez.Hernandez also singled, stole a base and scored the first run of the game (on a groundout) in the fourth.
Matt Chapman's league-leading 11th home run of the season, leading off the fourth, tied the game at 1-1. The next batter, Beau Taylor, ran an 0-2 count full before singling to left and Franklin Barreto followed with a double off the left field wall. Corpus Christi starter Kyle Smith then got two outs and was ahead of Jaycob Brugman, 0-2, before Brugman reached for a close pitch on (or just off) the outside corner, punching it into left for a two-run single and a 3-1 RockHounds lead.
Chris Jensen allowed one run on four hits over his first 6.1 innings before walking J.D. Davis with one out in the seventh. Tanielu followed with a drive toward the bullpen in deep left field and with J.P. Sportman in full-speed pursuit. The RockHounds left fielder actually got the ball in his glove, but then crashed (and "crashed" is the proper word) into the bullpen fence. The ball dislodged and fell into the bullpen for a two-run home run. Sportman initially stayed down following the absolutely brilliant effort, but did remain in the game.
Garcia's double in the 10th came with the bases empty and two out, followed by Hernandez's game-winner, just under the glove of Barreto at second and into right field. Aaron West pitched the last 3.1 innings, allowing no runs on one hit, to earn the win.
