Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
MIDLAND - Raul Alcantara pitched seven innings of one-run ball and lead-off hitter Brett Vertigan went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles as the RockHounds beat the Hooks 3-1 Saturday night at Security Bank Ballpark.
The result ended Midland's (21-20) seven-game skid, and halted Corpus Christi's (26-15) winning streak at a franchise-best 11 games.
The Hooks' lone tally came in the first. Alex Bregman notched an infield single and advanced to third on a grounder to first off the bat of Derek Fisher. Midland had three defenders on the right side for the left-handed Fisher and third base was not covered, allowing Bregman to take advantage. J.D. Davis was next and smashed a line drive off Alcantara's left arm. Davis beat the wrap at first and Bregman scored.
Alcantara, who has allowed just four earned runs in his last five starts, responded by permitting four more knocks the rest of the way. An Alfredo Gonzalez double in the second was Corpus Christi's only extra-base hit.
The RockHounds touched David Paulino for a pair of runs in the first. Vertigan and Franklin Barreto opened the frame with singles. Vertigan came home on a Yairo Munoz chopper to shortstop Chan-Jong Moon. Barreto swiped third and scored when Matt Chapman struck out on a pitch which got past Hooks catcher Alfredo Gonzalez.
Paulino achieved season-highs for strikeouts and innings, fanning eight batters in six frames. He retired seven of the last nine he faced.
Leading 2-1 in the seventh, Hounds nine-hole hitter Andy Paz served a single into center field off Angel Heredia. Vertigan was next and sent a double down the left-field line, putting Midland up by three.
Corpus Christi's lead-off hitter reached in each of the final two innings but a pair of double plays neutralized the threat.
Sunday's contest is a 2:00 start. Hooks lefty Brian Holmes (3-1, 3.69) is slated to face Joey Wagman (0-0, 6.75). This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
