Peoria Chiefs News Release
Eastlake, OH- The Lake County Captains won both legs of Wednesday's doubleheader at Classic Park, knocking off the Chiefs 5-1 and 2-0. For Peoria, it was the first time they lost consecutive games since late July.
GAME ONE:
In Wednesday's doubleheader opener, the Lake County Captains scored five unanswered runs to knock off the Chiefs 5-1.
Peoria's Inohan Paniagua matched Lake County starter pitch-for-pitch in the first three innings. The two clubs combined for just four baserunners through the first three innings.
It was the Chiefs who got the scoring started in the fourth. With one out in the frame, R.J. Yeager collected the first Peoria hit and first Peoria run with a solo homer to left field. For Yeager, it was his seventh High-A homer. The next batter, Jimmy Crooks, followed it up with a single and an advancement on an error. The Chiefs could not bring Crooks around to add on, however.
In the home fourth, Lake County got their run right back. The Captains loaded the bases with no one out against Paniagua. The right-hander punched out Jorge Burgos but Lake County later tied the score on a sac fly.
An inning later, the Captains broke through to take the lead. With runners at second and third and one out in the stanza, Dayan Frias punched out after swinging at a ball in the dirt. The ball kicked away from Peoria catcher Jimmy Crooks to score Chase DeLauter and give Lake County a 2-1 lead. The next batter, Caleb Ingle swung at a wild pitch in the dirt on strike three to allow another Captains run to score. With the lead at 3-1, Joe Lampe drove in a third run on an infield hit.
Lake County tacked on an insurance tally in the bottom of the sixth on a Jake Fox triple to right.
The Chiefs were held to just two hits in the opener and fell to 58-51 on the year.
GAME TWO:
Spot starter Edgar Manzo was sensational in Wednesday's nightcap at Classic Park but the Chiefs were unable to get the bats going in a 2-0 shutout loss to Lake County.
Manzo worked around a hit by pitch and walk to turn in four no-hit innings.
In the fifth, Lake County scored a pair of unearned tallies to do their damage. After consecutive fielding errors, the Captains had a runner at second with two outs. With two strikes on Nate Furman, the second baseman grounded over the first base bag to give the home team a 1-0 edge. Manzo, who allowed just one hit, was lifted from the contest. Joseph King followed Manzo and after a walk, Chase DeLauter singled home Furman to double the lead to 2-0.
The Chiefs were held to just four hits in the contest. Peoria's best scoring chance came in the third, as they put runners at second and third but could not capitalize. Nathan Church and Brody Moore combined for two hits each to record the four Chiefs hits.
Peoria drops to 58-52 with 22 games to play. They remain in a second-half playoff spot in the Midwest League West Division.
Game three of the series is set for Thursday at 7:00 p.m. EST/6:00 p.m. CST.
