Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH)--Mike Conroy slugged a grand slam and righthander Jim Deters tossed seven strong innings Tuesday night as the Captains rolled to a 7-2 victory over the Delmarva Shorebirds, 7-2, at Classic Park.
The Captains (27-21) won for the second straight night, but remain six games behind Lakewood, who won 7-5, at home against Hagerstown.
Conroy increased his team-leading and career-high RBI total to 63 with a grand slam in the fourth inning off Reid Hamblet (3-10). It was Conroy's 12th homer and second grand slam.
Conroy's slam came in a five-run fourth that wiped out a 2-1 Delmarva lead. The Captains loaded the bases on three singles against Hamblet. Chris De La Cruz then lined a single to right to tie the game at 2-2, prior to Conroy's blast.
Fernando Pacheco added a solo homer in the fifth, his 12th of the year, to make it 7-2.
Captains starter Jim Deters worked seven innings to become the first 10-game winner for the Captains since 2003. Deters scattered six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Deters allowed only a two-run homer to Vito Chiaravalloti in the top of the fourth, which gave the Shorebirds (18-31) a brief 2-1 lead.
Chris Gimenez got the Captains scoring started in the first inning when he laced an RBI double to score Juan Valdes for a 1-0 lead.
P.J. Hiser went 1-4 in the game to extend his hitting streak to eight games.
The Captains and Shorebirds will play game two of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05. Frank Herrmann will start for the Captains against 18-year-old righthander Brandon Erbe of the Shorebirds. For tickets, call 440-954-WINS.
