Lake County Captains News Release
(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains (10-11) reach double digits wins, after a one-run victory over the Lansing Lugnuts (7-14) on a partly cloudy Sunday afternoon at Classic Park
The contest was the first under two-hour nine-inning game for the Captains since June 18th, 2016, against the South Bend Cubs.
Lake County started the scoring in the first, an inning that has plated the most runs for the Captains this season with 20 in 21 games. With a runner on, Petey Halpin sent a ball down the left-field line that hit off the railing above the outfield wall for his first home run of the season. Immediately following that Jhonkensy Noel turned on a pitch and smacked it to deep left field. Noel's sixth home run of the year gave Lake County a 3-0 lead.
It was the second time this weekend the Captains hit back-to-back home runs.
Tommy Mace started his third Sunday game of the season. The right-hander retired the first six Lugnuts he faced and completed five innings of work for the first time this season. In the top of the third, Lazaro Armenteros shot a solo blast to left-field, one of only three hits allowed by the Florida native and the only run scored.
Lansing would tie it up in the sixth. After a single, Tyler Soderstrom went opposite field powering a ball over the left field fence. The Lugnuts starter Osvaldo Berrios kept the Captains off the board from the second through the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, with two outs and Micael Ramirez on second, Korey Holland stepped up to the plate. The Captains left fielder lined a ball into the right-center gap, plating Ramirez, advancing to third for his first triple of the year and making it a 4-3 lead.
Hunter Stanley, who entered in the sixth and allowed the tying home run to Lansing, pitched a scoreless final three innings. The right-hander totaled six strikeouts including two in the top of the ninth, and allowed only one hit after the homer. Stanley earned his second win of 2022.
Following an off-day, the Lake County Captains head to Dayton to begin a six-game road series with the Dragons on Tuesday, May 3. First pitch from Day Air Ballpark is at 7:05 p.m.
Coverage of the game can be found on WJCU.org/Captains and the MiLB First Pitch app.
