
Captains Drop First Game of Homestand to Lansing

(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains (42-37) lost 8-1 on Tuesday night in the series opener against the Lansing Lugnuts (38-41) in the first game of a 12-game homestand.
Lansing took the early lead in the second inning. After the Captains defense turned a double play, Jared McDonald stepped to the plate and smacked an opposite field home run to right field that put the Lugnuts in front 1-0.
The Lugnuts added another tally to their total in the third inning. Two singles started the inning for Lansing to put runners on first and third. Cobie Vance grounded a ball to third base where the Captains attempted to turn a double play and Elvis Peralta Jr. scored from third to make the score 2-0, Lugnuts.
With one out in the seventh for Lansing, Lester Madden Jr. doubled off the right field wall just avoiding the tag attempt of José Tena to start a Lugnuts rally. An error at third base by Raynel Delgado allowed Peralta Jr. to reach and Madden Jr. to move to third. With runners on the corners, Yerdel Vargas rolled a perfect bunt single up the third base line to bring in Madden Jr. The throw on the bunt from Delgado escaped first baseman Joe Naranjo and rolled down the right field line which allowed Peralta Jr. to score from first base and push Lansing's lead to 4-0.
In the bottom of the eighth inning Micah Pries put the Captains on the scoreboard with a no doubt home run to right field to make the score 4-1, Lansing.
Lansing opened up a large lead in the top of the ninth inning. After a leadoff walk, Peralta Jr. singled to put runners on the corners. Vargas drove in Madden Jr. with another single for the first Lansing run of the inning. Back to back walks to Vance and McColl forced in the second run of the inning for the Lugnuts. Austin Beck singled in another tally and another bases loaded walk to William Simoneit made the score 8-1, Lansing.
Jack Cushing (5-0) earned the win for Lansing with 5.1 shutout innings. He struck out six while scattering a walk and three hits.
Zach Draper (0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Captains. He spun six strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and four hits.
Charles Hall (5) earned the save in relief for the Lugnuts. He worked a scoreless 1.1 innings with two strikeouts.
Kevin Coulter takes the ball for the Captains on Wednesday for game two of the six-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m at Classic Park.
