(Eastlake, OH)--Righthander Jeff Stevens overcame a shaky first inning Wednesday night to win his fifth straight decision, and the Captains came back to notch a 7-4 win over the Asheville Tourists at Classic Park.

The Captains (18-14) pulled to within 3 1/2 games of the Lakewood BlueClaws, who lost 5-3 to Augusta.

Stevens (5-1) gave up two first-inning runs, but settled in afterward to work 5 1/3 innings. He didn't allow another run after the first, and surrendered just one further hit. He walked two and struck out five.

The Captains tied the game 2-2, with an RBI groundout by Chris De La Cruz in the second and a sacrifice fly by Max Ramirez in the third.

In the fifth, Juan Valdes led off with a single against Tourists starter Chaz Roe (3-4). Chris Gimenez followed with a two-run homer to left, his ninth of the year, to make it 4-2. Gimenez extended his hitting streak to a team-high 13 games.

Stevens left in the sixth with men on first and third and the Captains on top 4-2. Julio Pinto came on to fave Jason Van Kooten. Before throwing a pitch, Pinto faked a throw to third and then caught Cole Garner breaking for second. After retiring Garner in a rundown, the Captains threw to the plate to cut down Eric Young Jr. to complete the double-play.

The Tourists (18-15) stayed close, pulling to 5-4 in the eighth on solo homers by Dan Carte and Young, Jr. off Pinto. Young was 2-3 on the night, with a homer and double.

In the Captains eighth, Fernando Pacheco had a two-run single off David Patton to make it 7-4. Closer Matt Davis came in for the ninth and worked around a two-out jam with a pair of men on base to post his 23rd save.

Ramirez had two hits for the Captains, raising his average to .571 since his trade to the Indians last Thursday.

The Captains and Tourists will complete the series on Thursday evening at 7:05. For tickets, call 954-WINS.
