Rome Emperors News Release
Rome, GA - It appeared as if the Rome Braves defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers on a walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth, but it took one more inning for the Braves earn the victory 4-3 over the Grasshoppers in front of 2,789 fans at State Mutual Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The Rome Braves drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning as third baseman Derrick Arnold reached on an error and Manny Rodriguez followed by launching his second homer of the year over the right field wall onto the grassy knoll of Applebee's Home Run Hill giving the Braves an early lead of 2-0.
Greensboro would answer back in the top of the second with some station-to-station baseball as Colin Roberson and Jonathan Fulton delivered consecutive singles putting runners on first and second. Matt Kutler would then reach on an error by Rodriguez to load the bases and Rome starter Jeff Lyman would walk in a run to make the score 3-1. Greensboro would score again later in the inning as Paul Witt lofted a sacrifice fly to right plating Fulton tying the game at two apiece.
The Grasshoppers and Braves would exchange runs once again as the Grasshoppers scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a Greg Burns RBI single and the Braves would answer back in the bottom of the eighth on a Derrick Arnold RBI double making the score 3-3.
Things got bizarre in the bottom of the ninth with two outs when Rome shortstop Jaime Trejo came to the plate. On the first pitch, Trejo blasted an apparent game winning home run over the wall in left field, but as Trejo rounded the bases the umpires reversed their original call and stated that Trejo's blast was foul causing the game to go into extra innings. After the incident it only took one more inning for Rome to win the game officially as Rodriguez lined a two out single to left, moved to third on a single by Robert Marcial, and would score on a wild pitch from Grasshoppers pitcher Blake Jones winning the game for the Braves 4-3.
Rome reliever Brad Nelson (1-0) picked up the win for the Braves tossing two perfect innings while Jones (6-3) was tagged with the loss for Greensboro going one inning and allowing one earned.
Rome and Greensboro will conclude their series tomorrow afternoon starting at 7pm at State Mutual Stadium. For ticket information call 706-378-5144 or log on to www.romebraves.com.
