Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH)--Lefthander Tom Cowley pitched six masterful innings Friday night, retiring 14 batters in a row at one point, as the Captains cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Kannapolis Intimidators at Classic Park.
The Captains (19-14) won their second straight game, and stayed three games out of first behind Lakewood, who beat Greenville 2-1.
The game was played less than 12 hours after significant flooding in the Lake County area. The team announced before game-time that any fans holding tickets for Friday's game who were unable to come to the park may exchange those tickets for any remaining home game at Classic Park this season, subject to availability.
The Captains took a 2-0 lead on four consecutive hits in the second inning against Rafael Flores (3-3). Matt Fornasiere and Chris De La Cruz had RBI's. In the third, the Captains scored two more to make it 4-0. Chris Gimenez had an RBI single to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Fernando Pacheco added a sacrifice fly to drive in Gimenez.
Gimenez led off the fifth with a walk and scored on Mike Conroy's triple. Pacheco then drove in his second run of the night with a single to right.
Cowley (4-4) returned to the Captains lineup after a one-game fill-in assignment at Akron last Saturday when he earned his first double-A win. On Friday, he entered the game folowing a three-inning rehab start by righthander J.D. Martin.
Cowley, 22, gave up a hit to the first batter he faced, Brent Matheny. After a pop-out by Adam Ricks, Javier Castillo hit a double-play ball to second, but the ball was thrown away for an error, moving Metheny to third. He scored on a groundout by Brandon Allen.
The groundout by Allen started a string of 14 straight batters retired by Cowley. He hit Fernando Valenzuela, Jr. with a pitch in the ninth to break the string, but retired the next three batters to end the game.
Cowley lowered his ERA to 1.58. He struck out seven.
In game two on Saturday night, the Captains will send Jim Deters to the mound against Kannapolis righty Derek Rodriguez. For tickets call 440-954-WINS.
