Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Texas Rangers outfielders Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix are headed to Milwaukee after a trade sent them, along with relief pitcher Francisco Cordero, to the Brewers in exchange for two-time all-star outfielder Carlos Lee and right fielder Nelson Cruz. Mench and Nix both played for Savannah while the team was affiliated with the Texas Rangers from 1998-2002.
Nix spent the entire 2001 season in a Gnats uniform as he hit .278 with eight homers and 59 RBI. He has spent most of this season with the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma City, where he hit .269 with 10 homers and 55 RBI in 77 games. He hit .094 in nine games with the Rangers this season.
Mench played only six games in Savannah in 1999 but hit two home runs and drove in eight runs during that stretch. He has hit .284 with 12 home runs and 50 RBI in 87 games with the Rangers this season. He made headlines earlier this season when he homered in seven consecutive games from April 21-April 28. The streak of seven games is the second longest of its kind in Major League history.
