Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Carlos Martinez retired 21 of the first 22 batters he faced but received a no-decision as the Sand Gnats beat the West Virginia Power, 3-2, on a walk-off single by Tim Pahuta in the 11th inning Friday at Historic Grayson Stadium.

Martinez gave up one run on four hits in eight innings on the mound, striking out five in the effort. Martinez was perfect through 3.1 innings before giving up a double to Lorenzo Cain in the fourth. Eight innings pitched sets a new team high for any Sand Gnat this season.

Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 11th, Dee Brown sparked Savannah's rally as he led off the frame on a hit-by-pitch and moved into scoring position on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt from Edgardo Baez. Two batters later, Pahuta stepped up and sliced a single down the right-field line to score Brown from second and give the Gnats the win.

Savannah scored first in the game, going up 1-0 in the fourth on Scott Schade's RBI single. The Gnats held the lead until the eighth when the Power tied the score at 1-1 with an RBI double from Nestor Corredor. The Gnats reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the frame with a run on Brown's RBI double and were one strike away from winning the game in the ninth when Michael Bell's run-scoring two-bagger sent the game into extra innings.

Savannah and West Virginia continue the series Saturday at 705 p.m. as the Gnats send left-hander Gene Yost to the mound to face southpaw Dave Welch. Saturday's game will feature an autograph poster giveaway, presented by Adventure Radio.
