'Caps Stars Making Waves; Mendez, Zumaya Recognized for Performances

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps offense has been on fire in the month of April and now, some national organizations are taking notice. Sportsticker has named Whitecaps Outfielder Victor Mendez "Midwest League Batter of the Week." The announcement came after Mendez had eight hits, six runs, two triples and 11 RBI during his last 24 at bats; his slugging percentage for last week was .708.

Whitecaps starter Joel Zumaya is also garnering some national attention. Zumaya was recently named to Baseball America's Prospect Hot Sheet as a "prospect to watch." Zumaya is currently 2-1 with a 1.25 ERA. The 18-year-old leads the Midwest League with 32 strikeouts and has been nearly unhittable, holding batters to a .119 batting average. Detailed statistics for both Mendez and Zumaya are below.

The Whitecaps are currently on an eight game road-trip. Last night, the team split a doubleheader with Dayton, taking the first game 11-3 and losing the second 13-7. The 'Caps will be back home for a four game series against Beloit starting May 5.
