'Caps, Quakes share spoils in scoreless draw in San Jose

SAN JOSE, CA - Vancouver Whitecaps FC played to a 0-0 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes on Friday evening's Western Conference clash.

The match initially opened up with both squads showing high intensity. Only six minutes in, Ryan Raposo set up Brian White for a shot from the centre of the box, the ball was saved by San Jose's goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski.

San Jose quieted down after some time in the first half, with the 'Caps becoming the clear threat on the pitch out of the two teams. Maxime Crepeau's goal was relatively untested, with his biggest challenge came at the 31st-minute mark with a shot from Jeremy Ebobisse at a difficult angle.

Other notable chances for the 'Caps came from Ranko Veselinovic and Deiber Caicedo 27 minutes in, as well as Caicedo and Raposo in stoppage time at the end of the half.

Despite strong efforts, both teams headed into halftime goalless.

The second 45 saw San Jose make a blazing return with a newfound vigour to their play. At the 62nd-minute mark Crepeau was forced to make a magnificent save on another shot from Ebobisse that looked like it was destined for the bottom corner of the goal.

Ryan Gauld and Cristian Dajome were substituted on by head coach Marc Dos Santos, giving the team some additional bite to their attack. It marked Gauld's second substitute appearance. He gave the team arguably their best scoring attempt of the second half 73 minutes in.

Tosaint Ricketts and Michael Baldisimo were also subbed on, in addition to Bruno Gaspar who eventually came on to replace a hobbled Javain Brown.

The final 30 saw the game spring to life with both teams trying to open the scoring. The 'Caps were tested in the five minutes of stoppage time but hung on with a strong push of defence and goalkeeping.

The game ultimately concluded in a 0-0 draw. The 'Caps leave California with another point, extending their unbeaten run to six games.

Whitecaps FC have one more road match before they make their long-awaited return to BC Place. On Wednesday, they visit Austin FC for their first-ever meeting at Q2 Stadium. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. PT. live on TSN4/5 and AM730. The radio prematch show starts at 5 p.m. PT.
