Caps Late Rally Falls Just Short, Split Weekend with Lumberjacks

Madison Capitols News Release

The Madison Capitols fall 5-4 tonight in the series finale with the Muskegon Lumberjacks to split the weekend. Despite trailing 4-0 in the 2nd period and having to vacate the ice early for ice maintenance, The Caps battled all the way to the final horn.

With 3:56 left in the 2nd period, Nathan Lewis fired a shot top shelf after receiving a great pass from linemate Matt McGroarty on a 2-on-1 to get Madison on the board. Then, things got interesting.

A hole at center ice was brought to the attention of the officials after the Lewis goal. Both teams would vacate the ice for an early intermission with 3:56 still left in the 2nd period. Once it was fixed, both teams returned to play out the rest of the time left in the 2nd period.

Upon coming back out, the Caps took advantage of the minimal time still in the middle frame when Connor Deturris, who got the call up to the Capitols earlier this week, buried his first USHL goal top corner with 2:21 remaining in the 2nd frame.

With 12:07 left in regulation, Madison blueliner Luke Mittelstadt made a nice hustle play to win a puck race and fire home his second power play goal of the week just nine seconds into the man advantage. Trailing 5-3 The Caps would go on to pull netminder Simon Latkoczy for the extra attacker with a little over 90 seconds left in regulation. Madison would get one of two goals needed to tie Muskegon. Casey Severo tapped in a loose puck out front with 84 seconds left in regulation and unfortunately, that is where things would remain for the rest of the contest.

"We were on our heals early and took a while to recover. I am proud of how the guys battled until the end but disappointed that we waited until the end to battle," Capitols head coach Tom Upton said.

Following the trend of last night, Ben Dexheimer and Nick DeSantis both added another multi-point game under their belts tonight. The duo each had a pair of helpers in the contest.

The Caps return home next weekend for a two game series with Team USA. On Friday night, they will play the U17's and on Saturday, they will engage in battle with the U18's.
