Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals put a whopping 18 runs on the board during Saturday night's victory over Jose Canseco and the Yuma Scorpions, and they followed that outburst up on Sunday with another offensive explosion, outscoring the Scorpions 24-10 en route to a double-header sweep.
The Caps made it four consecutive victories over Canseco's Yuma squad on Sunday with wins in both seven-inning halves of the double bill, squeaking out a 7-6 decision in the afternoon affair and crushing their opponents 17-4 in the nightcap. With their fourth straight win, the Caps improve to 46-28 and are just one game behind the Calgary Vipers for first place in the North American League's North Division.
The Caps survived a late Scorpions charge to escape with the victory in the first half of Sunday's double-header. The home squad took a 7-2 lead into the seventh inning, but Yuma put four on the board before the Caps finally shut the door. Starting pitcher Dallas Buck had a solid outing and picked up the victory for Edmonton, as he tossed six innings in which he surrendered eight hits and only two runs.
The offensive star for the Caps in game one was right fielder Tom Collaro, who went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, three RBI and two runs scored. First baseman J.D. Closser also hit a longball to knock in a run for the home side. Oddly enough, Collaro and Closser each homered again in the second game and each drove in two runs, while left fielder Todd Linden had four RBI, second baseman Enrique Cruz drove in three and centre fielder Steve Brown also knocked in a pair.
The Caps got the job done on the mound by committee in game two, as Mike Hrynio got the start and pitched three innings, giving up six hits and three runs. Chad Blackwell then tossed two shutout innings, David Davidson surrendered one run in one inning of work, and Jorge Vasquez finished the victory with a perfect seventh.
Sunday's double-header was the third annual Bark In The Park event, as the Caps allowed fans to bring their dogs to TELUS Field for one day only. More than 130 dogs were in attendance for the games, with the proceeds from all the Bark In The Park tickets donated to the Edmonton Humane Society.
Following an off-day on Monday, the Caps will look to make it five straight wins over the Scorpions on Tuesday when their six-game series continues with the final $2 Tuesday of the season starting at 7 p.m., presented by 103.9 CISN FM and featuring pizza, nachos, ice cream, fries and all-you-can-drink slushies for just $2.
The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer, featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Flex packs are available in multiples of eight for $48 less than day-of-game pricing. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
