Caps' a Hit in South Bend

SOUTH BEND, IN - A season-high twenty-one hits launched the West Michigan Whitecaps to an 11-4 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks on Wednesday night at Coveleski Stadium. The Whitecaps got great pitching from starter Brayan Villarreal as they evened the four game series at a game apiece.

The ‘Caps came out swinging early in South Bend. West Michigan erupted for 6 runs in the second inning with two outs. Gustavo Nunez brought home the game's first run with an RBI single. Brandon Douglas swatted a two-run single to left for a 3-0 lead. Billy Nowlin followed with a two-run triple to right, and Jordan Lennerton laced a single off the right field wall for a 6-0 Whitecaps' lead.

West Michigan would build an 8-0 advantage through four innings before South Bend would get on the board. Two consecutive walks allowed Rossmel Perez to single in the ‘Hawks first run. A double play brought in the other run.

Ahead 8-2, the Whitecaps' Jordan Lennerton took over the team lead in homeruns with his seventh of the year- a solo shot to right. In the seventh, RBI hits from Billy Nowlin and Bryan Pounds upped the lead to 11-2.

South Bend gathered two more runs in the eighth on two-out, RBI hits from Alfredo Marte and A.J. Pollock.

Brayan Villarreal threw 6 innings of dominating baseball. The right hander gave up 2 earned runs, 3 walks and had 7 strikeouts. Villarreal now stands at 2-0 on the year.

Silver Hawks' starter Randy Rodriquez was roughed up for 6 earned runs in 2 innings. He allowed 7 hits, walked 1 and did not strike out anyone.

Billy Nowlin needed only a home run for the cycle. He finished 4-6 with 3 RBI. Bryan Pounds was 4-5 with 2 RBI as well.

Game three of the series is Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at Coveleski Stadium.
