
Bees Score 12 Runs In Win Over Quad Cities

Davenport, IA (July 1, 2009) - The Burlington Bees scored 12 runs on 15 hits and defeated Quad Cities 12-5 Wednesday night in Davenport. With the win, the four-game series between the Bees and the River Bandits is tied at a game apiece.
The Bees opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Marc Maddox led off with a walk and then stole second and moved to third on an error. Nick Van Stratten then doubled to score Maddox. After Van Stratten moved to third on an error, Eric Hosmer hit an RBI ground-out to give the Bees a 2-0 lead.
Quad Cities took their first lead of the day scoring four runs in the second inning. The Bees answered with six runs in the third inning. In the inning, the Bees sent 11 batters to the plate and recorded six hits in addition to receiving two walks. The biggest hit of the inning was a two-out two-run double to straight-away center field by Jason Taylor.
The Bees added to their lead in the sixth inning. Juan Rivera led the inning off with a single and then stole second. Maddox then walked to put runners on at first and second. Van Stratten then came to the plate and flew out, which moved Rivera to third. Hosmer then walked and ball four was a wild pitch, which scored Rivera. Another wild pitch moved Maddox and Hosmer up a bag. Nick Francis then doubled to score both Maddox and Hosmer to give the Bees an 11-4 lead. The Bees picked up their final run in the eighth inning. Hosmer led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Hosmer then scored on a David Wood two-out single. Quad Cities did add one final run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Tim Melville got the start for the Bees but did not factor into the decision. Melville pitched four innings allowing four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Justin Garcia pitched four shutout innings allowing just three hits with five strikeouts and one walk He picked up the win and is now 2-5. Riquy Pena pitched the final inning allowing one run.
The Bees had 15 hits in the game. Sean McCauley and Rivera led the way with three hits each. Van Stratten and David Wood each had two hits. Van Stratten, Francis, Wood and Taylor each had two RBI. Maddox walked five times and scored three runs. Van Stratten, Hosmer and Rivera each scored two times. Quad Cities used six pitchers in the game and committed four errors. There was a 20-minute delay in the sixth inning when the lights in left field went out.
The Bees continue the four-game series at Quad Cities on Thursday. Mike Lehmann is the scheduled starter with first pitch scheduled for 7:00.
