Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits got a taste of their own medicine on Wednesday night, as the Burlington Bees rode a six-run third inning to a 12-5 victory at Modern Woodmen Park.

Quad Cities (3-3, 33-43) won the series opener on Tuesday on the strength of a six-run inning of their own, so the four-game set is now even heading into a two-day Independence Day blowout at Modern Woodmen Park that will include an appearance by Sgt. Slaughter and an extravagant post-game fireworks display on Thursday night. Burlington (3-3, 32-44) pounded out 15 hits in the win, as all nine position players registered at least one knock, seven different regulars drove in runs, and seven different men crossed the plate.

Trailing 2-0, the River Bandits rallied for four runs in the bottom of the second to turn a two-run deficit into a brief two-run lead. A one-out double by Travis Mitchell was followed by a wild pitch and a walk to put men at the corners. Jose Garcia then delivered a run-scoring single to center to get Quad Cities on the board. With two outs in the frame the River Bandits continued their rally when Jarred Bogany drilled a two-run double to deep center field, while Charlie Cutler added an RBI-single up the middle to make it a 4-2 ballgame.

The lead did not last long, however, as the Bees rallied for six runs on seven hits in a momentum-turning third inning. Quad Cities starter Gary Daley walked the first two batters of the frame and Nick Van Stratten's single pulled Burlington to within 4-3. After striking out the next two men Daley was on the verge of limiting the damage, but Jason Taylor clubbed a double to center that plated two runners and recaptured the Bees' lead, 5-4.

While Taylor's double chased Daley from the game, reliever Adam Veres did not fare much better. Burlington rallied for five consecutive singles against him as three more runs crossed the plate, a string of hits that did not come to an end until Mitchell gunned down a runner at the plate to record the third out of the frame. When the dust settled, the Bees' advantage was 8-4.

Burlington added three more runs in the sixth. A single followed by two walks and a wild pitch allowed the first run to cross the plate, while Nick Francis roped a two-run double into the left field corner to push the lead to 11-4.

The deficit was 12-4 when the River Bandits managed a final run in the ninth. Cutler drew a leadoff walk to reach base for the fifth time to cap a 3-for-3 night that included two free passes. He eventually came around to score on a groundout by Jason Stidham to reach the 12-5 final.

Justin Garcia (2-5) earned a well-deserved win out of the Bees bullpen, tossing four shutout innings while allowing just three hits and fanning five.

Daley (3-3) suffered the loss for Quad Cities, giving up six runs on three hits and three walks over 2.2 frames.

UP NEXT: The Quad Cities' first Independence Day party will take place on July 2 at Modern Woodmen Park on a Thirst-day Thursday which will include $2 draft beer and fountain Pepsi products before an extravagant post-game fireworks show. The homestand concludes on July 3 as the City of Davenport's Red, White and Boom fireworks show kicks off at Modern Woodmen Park after the game for another huge Fourth of July party!
