Madison Capitols News Release
Madison, WI- The Madison Capitols (14-8-4) lost a late 1-0 lead, but were able to capitalize in overtime on the power play to knock off the Muskegon Lumberjacks (18-7-3) in the third period.
The Capitols and Lumberjacks traded a pair of power play chances in the opening period with neither team able to strike. Muskegon was outshot 12-6, but kept Madison off the board by blocking 15 Capitols offerings in the opening frame in front of their goaltender Eric Schierhorn.
The second period brought more of the same, as Schierhorn and the shot-blocking defense in front of him continued to keep Madison at bay, while Garrett Metcalf had a busier middle period, stopping nine Muskegon shot opportunities.
Schierhorn's best stop came in tight, as the Capitols were chopping away at a rebound. The Lumberjack goalie, despite being screened out, was able to kick his left pad out to deny two Madison chances in tight.
Through just two periods, Muskegon blocked an incredible 21 shots, while the Capitols were able to get 22 on Schierhorn's cage.
Madison finally was able to pierce Schierhorn's armor in the third. After both teams had a goal waved off, Charlie Gerard drove the center lane and redirected a Freddy Gerard pass through Schierhorn to make it 1-0 at 13:23 of the third period.
Not to be outdone, Muskegon would not fade, and on a late power play, Tommy Marchin tied the score on his 15th goal of the season at 17:53.
That set the stage for overtime after Madison had outshot Muskegon 36-23 in regulation. Trevor Hamilton was whistled down for boarding Haralds Egle at 0:16.
Ultimately, Egle fired the last shot of the evening, finding a Daniel Willett rebound and potting his fifth power play goal of the season on his backhand. The former Lumberjack now has eight goals on the season, while also scoring at least a point in ten of his last eleven games.
Metcalf picked up another victory on home ice in the Madison net, stopping 22 of 23 shots that came his way.
The Capitols complete their 2014 calendar year on Tuesday when they host the Green Bay Gamblers for the last of eight meetings in the Wisconsin Cheese Cup. Madison has clinched the season series, going 6-0-1 in the first seven matchups.
Tuesday is also the last chance for fans to take advantage of the Kids' Free Ticket Program in December (in conjunction with UW Health Sports Medicine.) Children aged 12 and younger will get into the game free of charge with the purchase of any adult ticket.
