Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MADISON, Wisconsin (December 29th) - The Muskegon Lumberjacks took to the ice in their first road game in exactly a month tonight against the expansion Madison Capitols in the team's first-ever road trip out to Madison, Wisconsin. In a defensive struggle, both teams exchanged late third period tallies and saw the game slip into a five-minute overtime session. Early in the four-on-four stanza, the host Capitols took advantage of a Lumberjacks penalty claiming the second point in a 2-1 decision at the Alliant Energy Center. For the second consecutive game, Muskegon earned a single point in the standings following an extra time setback.
The first two periods featured a scoreless draw that included both teams going a combined 0-for-5 on the man advantage with Madison outshooting Muskegon through the first 40 minutes by a 22-15 margin.
The third period raced into the second half of the frame when the Capitols (14-8-4, 32 points) cracked the scoreboard first at the 13:23 mark as Freddy Gerard centered a feed to Charlie Gerard in the slot, who tipped a one-timer past the left pad of Eric Schierhorn (13-3-3) for his fourth of the season.
As the game neared its ending stages of regulation, the Lumberjacks (18-7-3, 39 points) took advantage of their first power play opportunity since late in the first stanza as Tommy Marchin fired a shot from the slot through the five-hole of Garrett Metcalf (6-4-1) for his team-leading 15th goal of the season to even the game at 1-1 with 2:07 to go. Trevor Hamilton and Jack Rowe helped on the man advantage tally.
The remainder of regulation saw no game-winning goal scored and an overtime session ensued. Just 16 seconds into the extra frame, the Lumberjacks were called for boarding leading to a four-on-three power play opportunity for the Capitols. With 37 seconds left in the man advantage, former Lumberjack Haralds Egle found a loose rebound to Schierhorn's right and backhanded his eighth of the season 1:39 into the overtime off an initial shot fired by another former Lumberjack in Daniel Willett.
Madison outshot Muskegon for the game, 38-23. Garrett Metcalf picks up the victory with 22 saves on the night, while Eric Schierhorn takes the road overtime loss stopping 36 of 38 shots. Tommy Marchin recorded his 21st career USHL goal. Trevor Hamilton notched his 21st career USHL point, while Jack Rowe claims his 90th career USHL point with an assist each. Muskegon falls to 1-0-1 against Madison this season with four regular season meetings left between the two Eastern Conference foes.
