Madison Capitols News Release

Madison, WI- The Madison Capitols (17-13-7) could not solve a stifling defense and solid goaltender as the Waterloo Black Hawks (14-21-3) came out on top of Madison, 5-0 on Friday at the Alliant Energy Center.

The Capitols and Black Hawks began the night tentatively with Waterloo getting the game's first power play just 3:22 after the two squads struggled to find open ice. Madison was able to keep the fourth-ranked Waterloo power play off the board, but the Black Hawks continued to carry a lot of the territorial play.

Waterloo broke through finally at 14:44 at five-on-five when Thomas Novak neatly walked past a couple Capitol defenders by the Madison bench, setting up a two-on-one. On the odd-man rush, he then found Max Coatta at the right post, who touched it past Garrett Metcalf to give the Black Hawks the 1-0 lead.

Madison appeared to get on the board late in the first as Charlie Gerard cut in on goal from the left side and fluttered a wrister over Waterloo goaltender Cale Morris, but the puck dinged off the iron and stayed out.

The tight checking, clogged neutral zone remained a theme throughout the second, as the Capitols and Black Hawks could not seem to find a lot of ice with which to work.

Adding to the Capitols' woes, Waterloo struck very quickly in the second, as Henrik Rommel took a shot from the left circle that pinballed past Metcalf as Novak was charging the net. Novak got the credit for the goal at 0:52. The Black Hawks carried the 2-0 lead into the second intermission by outshooting Madison 24-14 through 40 minutes.

The Black Hawks quickly put the exclamation point on a nearly flawless road performance as Rem Pitlick & John Wiitala scored just 24 seconds apart early in the third period to put the game away. Novak added a second goal on a power play at 12:22 to round out the scoring. Metcalf finished the night with 36 saves for Madison.

At the other end, Morris finished the night with his second shutout in six games with Waterloo, stopping 21 pucks.

Madison turns right around Saturday to welcome the Youngstown Phantoms to town for a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday.
