Capitals Recall Strachan from Hershey on Emergency Basis

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Washington Capitals have recalled defenseman Tyson Strachan from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) on an emergency basis and re-assigned center Ryan Stoa to Hershey, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Strachan, 29, has skated in nine games with Washington this season, registering 19 penalty minutes. The Melfort, Saskatchewan, native made his Capitals debut on Nov. 15 against Detroit. Strachan has appeared in 129 career NHL games with St. Louis, Florida and Washington, recording 13 points (one goal, 12 assists) and 146 penalty minutes.

Strachan appeared in 34 games with Hershey this season, tallying 14 points (two goals, 12 assists) and 48 penalty minutes. The 6'3", 210-pound defenseman leads the Bears in plus/minus (+14). In 250 career AHL games, Strachan has earned 82 points (14 goals, 68 assists) and 318 penalty minutes. Strachan spent four seasons at Ohio State University and was drafted by Carolina in the fifth round (137th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. The Capitals signed Strachan as a free agent on July 8, 2013.

Stoa, 26, has skated in 36 games with Hershey this season, registering 24 points (nine goals, 15 assists) and 39 penalty minutes. The 6'4", 224-pound center ranks third among Bears skaters in assists, tied for third in points and fifth on the team in goals. Stoa has registered 152 points (75 goals, 77 assists) and 244 penalty minutes in 259 career AHL games with Lake Erie and Hershey. The Bloomington, Minn., native has appeared in 37 career NHL games with Colorado, registering seven points (four goals, three assists) and 20 penalty minutes.
