Portland Pirates News Release

Lewiston, ME - The St. John's IceCaps used five power play goals to power past the Pirates 7-4 Friday night at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

Jerome Samson scored twice and Matt Hutchinson made 29 saves to drop the Pirates to 6-8-0-6 at home this season.

The Pirates jumped on the IceCaps quickly, scoring just 18 seconds into the game. Tobias Rieder wrapped around the net and found Phil Lane at the bottom of the left circle, where he beat Hutchinson to the glove side for an early 1-0 lead. The Pirates played with the lead through most of the period before Patrice Cormier tied it at 18:38 when he deflected a shot past Visentin.

In the second, it was St. John's that started strong, scoring two power play goals at 1:37 and 12:31. Samson notched his 15th goal of the year for the IceCaps while Lowry extended the lead to two at 12:31.

Szwarz answered quickly for the Pirates, knocking home his fifth of the season at 13:55. After a stop by Hutchinson on a Lucas Lessio breakaway, Lessio jumped onto the puck again, fighting towards the net. The puck bounced to Szwarz and he was able to fire it into the net. Then, at 16:44, Brandon McMillan scored shorthanded to tie the game at 3-3. After a face off win, Mathieu Brodeur rifled a shot on net that Hutchinson saved but the rebound landed on McMillan's stick and he beat the goalie easily.

But 32 seconds later, Jason Jaffray, left all alone in front of Visentin, gave the IceCaps the lead back for their third power play goal of the period.

In the third, the Pirates again tied the game, this time with a power play goal of their own from Lucas Lessio. With a 5-on-3 advantage, the Pirates played tic-tac-toe with Lessio blasting a shot from the lower right circle into the St. Johns cage. But the IceCaps would score three straight goals to ice the game, including two more on the power play. John Albert beat Visentin with a slap shot from the center of the ice at 10:15 with a man up to give the IceCaps a 5-4 lead, followed by Samson notching his second goal of the night two and a half minutes later. Will O'Neill tallied the final IceCaps goal at 17:44 to make the final 7-4.

The Pirates are back in action Saturday night when they host the Binghamton Senators at 7:00 p.m. at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
