Charlotte Checkers News Release
RALEIGH, NC - Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed right wing Jared Staal to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Staal $550,000 on the NHL level or $60,000 on the American Hockey League (AHL) level during the 2013-14 season.
Staal, 22, appeared in his first NHL season in 2012-13, skating in two games with the Hurricanes. The Thunder Bay, Ont., native established career highs in games played (52), goals (4), assists (3), points (7) and penalty minutes (25) on the AHL level with Charlotte. Staal made his NHL debut on April 25 against the New York Rangers, starting the game on the same line with his two older brothers, Eric and Jordan. It marked the fourth time in NHL history that a trio of brothers played for the same team during the same season, and the first since Peter, Anton and Marian Stastny did so for Quebec in 1985.
Selected by the Phoenix Coyotes in the second round, 49th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Staal was acquired by the Hurricanes on May 13, 2010, in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He has totaled eight goals and 10 assists (18 points) in 119 career AHL games with San Antonio, Providence and Charlotte.
