Canaries split inter-state doubleheader

Sioux Falls - After a dramatic 3-1 ninth inning win in Sioux City, Iowa earlier this morning, the Sioux Falls Canaries (3-2) returned home and dropped the nightcap of their doubleheader, 8-4, with the Sioux City Explorers (2-3).

The day game saw a pitcher's duel between Matt Petrusek (7.0 IP, 1 ER, 5 H) and Trever Marcotte (7.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 H).

The game remained tied, 1-1, until the ninth inning. Chris Hall reached with two outs on a two-base throwing error by Robert Mendoza. David Hoffman followed with an RBI double to put the Canaries ahead, 2-1. Then Chris Weber drove in Hoffman with a single for the 3-1 final.

Jason Cierlik (1-0) got the win in relief. Billy Keppinger (0-1) took the loss. John Wesley allowed just one hit in picking up his second save of the season.

In the night cap, the Canaries were the first to get on the board. Alexis Hernandez singled home Ralph Santana from third base in the first inning, and Chris Weber plated Chris Hall in the second inning to give the Canaries a 2-0 lead.

The X's went ahead in the fourth. After a solo home run by Jorge Moreno tied the game. Alex Llanos and Chris Grossman got on base and were driven in by Jason Carlson and Ryan Ruiz to give Sioux City a 4-2 lead.

Abner Arroyo hit his first home run of the year in the bottom of the fifth to cut into the Explorers lead, 4-3. After the Explorers extended their lead to 6-3, Alexis Hernandez hit an eight inning home run to make it 6-4. In the ninth Sioux City added two for an 8-4 victory.

Jason Wall (0-1) pitched 3.2 innings giving up four runs on 10 hits in the loss. J.D. Sholten (1-0) got the win in game two for the Explorers.

After a day off Tuesday, the Canaries embark on a five game road trip beginning Wednesday in Sioux City.
